A CANDLE FOR A FRIEND

I pass on this candle with its rainbow of light in memory of my friend and collegue, Author

CandleForRyanRYAN BARLETT.
Ryan died Aug 31 in hospital of apparent septicimia.
He leaves family and friends behind him along with a Very impressive body of writing.

His love for people was always evident, especially foremost in his thoughts were our GLTBQIA Siblings who are NOT living the Full life because of homelessness or abuse or self hatred and his writing echoed a lot of that compassion.

While he could be difficult and touchy about certain subjects and was at times argumentative and abrasive, I am PROUD to have called him my friend and I will mourn his passing.

Sleep well, Ryan. We’ve got this now.

Tell YOUR Story

This is intended to
showcase true stories of when you came out, OR your decision NOT to come out. (Both
are equally correct choices). We will take a cross section of the stories we receive
and assign actors to read your story dramatically with appropriate sound effects and
music.

Here are the rules:
[1] NO SEXUAL CONTENT!  We’re not interested in the time you lost your virginity. We
are not publishing any “sex” stories, these are stories of how you told other people
that you were gay or lesbian or bi or whatever.

[2] DO NOT NAME NAMES: Refer to people as “My mom” or “My best friend” or “the
bully” etc. You would not want to be forced out of the closet, so please don’t make
other people uncomfortable by naming them.

[3] DO NOT INCLUDE INFORMATION THAT WILL IDENTIFY YOU: This is not a way to get
dates <grin>. This is to help other people who are thinking about coming out and the
best way to help them is to provide them with REAL LIFE experiences.

[4] PLEASE DO NOT SWEAR: Swearing happens all the time, we know, but a large portion
of our listenership is early to mid teens. They don’t need to hear more of that
language… BUT BE HONEST. If you had a bad coming out and people said evil or
hateful things to you OR about you, put them in and trust us to find a “cleaner” way
to say it.

[5] DON’T CENSOR YOURSELF: If it was a GOOD coming out or a BAD One, Speak your
mind. People need to know BOTH sides of this situation if they are to make the right
decision for them.

Please limit your story to about 3 pages in length, In english and
submit them to:

feedback@leapaudio.org

by SEPTEMBER 30 of this year.

We appreciate all of you and the courage it takes to make this life changing
choice.

Warning Signs of Suicidal Feelings or Thoughts

(Editors Note: Thanks to www.webmd.com for the following information)

Warning signs that someone may be thinking about or planning to commit suicide include:

  • Always talking or thinking about death
  • Clinical depression — deep sadness, loss of interest, trouble sleeping and eating — that gets worse
  • Having a “death wish,” tempting fate by taking risks that could lead to death, such as driving fast or running red lights
  • Losing interest in things one used to care about
  • Making comments about being hopeless, helpless, or worthless
  • Putting affairs in order, tying up loose ends, changing a will
  • Saying things like “it would be better if I wasn’t here” or “I want out”
  • Sudden, unexpected switch from being very sad to being very calm or appearing to be happy
  • Talking about suicide or killing one’s self
  • Visiting or calling people to say goodbye

Be especially concerned if a person is exhibiting any of these warning signs and has attempted suicide in the past. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, between 20% and 50% of people who commit suicide have had a previous attempt.
